The barn conversion at Burneside was upside down. Open-plan sitting and dining room on the upper floor, small kitchen with fitted units beside it, then stairs going *down* to two small bedrooms, a bathroom and a scrap of hall. Everything went except the vacuum cleaner in the upstairs sitting area — that was the one thing marked to stay. Curtains cleared, carpets left down. Upright fridge freezer out, cooker out. The property was cleaned afterwards, no garden work wanted. Water and power were still connected, which matters more than people expect: a clean at the end of a clearance is a very different job when there's no tap and no light in a windowless bedroom.

A week later we were at the other end of town, on the trading estate at the far end of it, and it wasn't a house at all. It was a storage unit, LA9, the first of November 2022. The booking had come in a fortnight before with a plain enough plan attached to it. She would meet us there, take away a couple of boxes she wanted to keep, and the rest was to be offered on. "Please donate the rest to charity if you can," she wrote, and we did wherever anything stood a chance.

She couldn't get there — she had to drive out of the county at short notice — and the message landed first thing in the morning: "Please just throw all boxes away as nothing worth keeping." So it was boxes, floor to roller door, with nobody on site to ask about any of it. That is exactly why the earlier instruction mattered: anything with a life left in it had already been flagged, and the rest could go without a phone call every ten minutes.
One thing had to be sorted before a single box moved. The unit hadn't been released to us by the yard, and she settled that from two hundred miles away while the lads stood about. Sorry about that, she said, and it was no trouble; a wait of twenty minutes at the start of a storage clearance is nothing at all. It happens more often than you would think.
Parking she had thought about before we asked, which is rarer still: "you can park across the road from the unit which is at the end of the industrial estate, as there vehicles are parked inside, I have informed them you'll be there".
