42 clearances have landed in Cumbria postcodes — more than in several counties twice its population. CA28 at Whitehaven comes up most, then LA23 at Windermere, LA11 at Grange, LA9 in Kendal and CA12 at Keswick.
Older people here still say Cumberland for the west and Westmorland for the south, and both names outlived the counties by fifty years. The Lake District is the third name for the middle of it, and the one visitors use.
Distance is the honest problem
Carlisle to Barrow is not a short trip, and Whitehaven is not on the way to anywhere. We plan Cumbrian work as a trip with a date fixed in advance rather than a loose promise, because that is the only version that holds.
The west coast — Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport — is dense terraced housing with yards and back lanes, and a lot of long occupancy. The Lakes towns are holiday and retirement stock: converted properties, second homes, and lofts that were filled once.
The Furness end, Barrow and Ulverston, is another run again.
