December 2020, a property in Skellingthorpe, LN6, out on the western edge of Lincoln where the housing gives way to fields. The clearance was arranged by a relative of the household. Three vanloads came off the property in the one day, and two mattresses came off the beds. June 2022, a different sort of job entirely. Three-bed bungalow east of the city in LN3, with a garage and an outhouse to empty as well as the house itself. The person organising it filled the booking form in properly. That makes our morning easier: "All items in kitchen to remain (washing machine and cooker)", carpets staying, curtains staying, no fridge or freezer to take, no cleaning wanted afterwards, no garden work.
One line on that form mattered more than the rest. Against special requirements he had written: "Adjustable bed may need to be separated, as It's very heavy". That is the motorised kind: two heavy sections plus a motor and a frame. and if you try to walk one out whole through a bungalow doorway you will take the architrave with you. Knowing in advance meant the team brought the right tools and went in expecting to spend twenty minutes on it, rather than being surprised at half four in the afternoon.
Parking was the easy part for once. "No, plenty of room on drive", the form said, and there was: the tipper stood outside the door all day. He asked for the invoice to go to an address over in Market Rasen, up the A46, and settled it by bank transfer. Garage and outhouse were emptied along with the house, and the van went back out to the transfer station a second time to finish the day.

Getting a van about the city
Anyone who lives here knows Lincoln is really two towns stacked on top of each other. Uphill, round the Bailgate and the cathedral, the streets are old and tight. Often cobbled, and a Luton has to be thought about before it is driven — where it will stand, whether the tail-lift has clearance, how far the lads are carrying things to reach it. Lincoln station is five minutes' walk from the middle of town, which is handy when an executor is coming in by train from Nottingham or Newark to open a house up for us and go back the same afternoon. Furniture, white goods and household bits with usable life left in them get offered on locally first — reuse schemes and charity outlets take a fair amount, and it is better than watching a decent wardrobe get crushed. Not everything we empty in this county is a house. In October 2019 we cleared a doctors' surgery out towards the Arboretum. It was instructed by an NHS commissioning body whose payments were handled from an office in West Yorkshire — the paperwork had to carry a purchase order number and be posted to a payables department a long way from anyone who had ever seen the building.
