Most of the house clearance work we take on in Spalding arrives the same way. Spalding is Fens country, flat and easy to reach. The dresser was the one thing we had to plan for. Everything else about that booking was straightforward enough — a two-bedroom bungalow with a garage, on the PE11 side, driveway to stand on, nothing hazardous that anybody knew of. But the customer flagged one item on the booking form and flagged it plainly: "Large Welsh dresser to be dismantled".
That is a sentence worth reading twice, because a large Welsh dresser is not one piece of furniture. It is two, sometimes three: a base with drawers and cupboards, a rack of shelves that sits on top of it, and occasionally a cornice pinned along the front of that. Whoever put it in the room did it in parts, and it comes out in parts. The alternative is a lot of paint off a door frame and a lot of swearing in a hallway that was never wide enough. So we allowed time for it, took the rack off first, emptied the base before lifting it, and it went out of the door without touching either side.
The rest of the instructions on the form told us as much about the house as a walk round would have. Carpets: "NO, rugs only" — so the floors were staying and the rugs were coming, which changes how you work a room, because you lift and roll rather than cut and drag. Curtains, the customer answered: "YES but please leave net curtains". That is the kind of detail nobody invents. Nets stay up because the bungalow was still being looked at from the road and nobody wanted the front room on show to the whole street. It is a small thing that matters a great deal to the person asking, and it goes on the sheet in capitals so no one on the team takes them down out of habit.
Kitchen units and fitted wardrobes were to be left. Fitted means fixed, and fixed means it is a strip-out job rather than a clearance the moment you touch it — a different trade, different day, different waste stream. Leaving them is usually the right call when a property is being sold rather than gutted, and it kept the day to a single, sensible scope. The loose contents, the rugs, the curtains that weren't nets, and the dresser in pieces.
Parking, the customer wrote, was no restriction — "NO there's a driveway". In this district that is the answer we most like to see. And on hazards: "Not that that we know of". Honest, and about right for a bungalow of that age. We still opened the garage before committing to a load size, because garages are where the surprises live. A drum of something with the label perished off it, a gas bottle for a patio heater nobody has used since the children left home. Nothing of that sort turned up here.
