A fridge or freezer has to be degassed and handled as WEEE, so it travels apart from the rest and goes to a permitted route of its own; a washing machine is scrap metal and goes another way again; and a cooker that is staying must not be touched. A cooker taken by mistake is a phone call nobody enjoys. Same with the soft furnishings — "No carpets or curtains to be cleared." So the floors stayed dressed and the windows stayed dressed, and the team worked around them.
Then there were the things being kept. "A few items to be left which I will have sorted out." Those had been put together in one place before we arrived, which is exactly the way to do it: anything set aside, in one room, and told to the lads at the start of the day rather than shouted across a hallway at three in the afternoon. Cupboards and drawers to be emptied means precisely that — every drawer opened, every cupboard checked, the contents sorted rather than swept into a bag. It is the slow part of any clearance and it is where the paperwork, the photographs and the odd bit of jewellery turn up. And the shed. Sheds are always fuller than the description.
