The sofa was the whole job. One settee and two armchairs out of a house in E13 on a Friday afternoon in December 2024 — the white goods were staying, the beds were staying, and the rest had already gone. What turned it from a ten-minute lift into a proper booking was the road. Residents' bays end to end, no loading bay, and nowhere obvious to stand a caged tipper while three pieces of upholstery come out through a front door. Whoever was arranging it had rung the day before, unsure what load size to ask for, and then set the whole scope out in a single line: "Sofa and armchairs - I think that’s it as white goods and beds staying at the house." A good share of house clearance in Newham looks exactly like that. Not a whole property at all. Just the last three awkward things nobody's car will take.
Upholstery is the part people don't expect, mind. Anything with foam inside it — sofas, armchairs, futons, office chairs, beanbags, a fair few headboards — counts as POPs waste. POPs stands for persistent organic pollutants, meaning the flame retardants stitched into the padding, and since the Environment Agency tightened its guidance in 2023 that material cannot be mixed into a general load or recycled the ordinary way. It ran as one load with the clearance team on site, plus a mattress, a POPs item, and a car battery that had been left sitting in the garden. Lead-acid batteries are hazardous waste, they travel on their own paperwork, and they cannot go in with household rubbish under any circumstances — the number of them we find behind sheds across E16 and E13 would surprise you. The works were raised in the October, due by the early November, and the file wasn't finally closed until the February. What can't ride in an ordinary load
Half-used tins of emulsion. Gas canisters off a patio heater. Fire extinguishers, car tyres, and anything with asbestos in it, which in this part of London usually means a garage roof or an old textured ceiling. Some of that we will take, some of it we will not touch at all, and we say which is which before the day rather than on the doorstep. Fridges and freezers sit in their own category because the gas has to be drawn off under permit before the carcass is broken up, so under-counter, tall upright and American-style are all handled differently. Plasterboard has to be kept apart from general waste at the transfer station. Paint we would rather you left in the tin with the lid on than tipped down a drain, and if there are twenty tins of it in a shed we will want to know in advance.
