House clearance in Farnham usually arrives as one of three jobs: a family home being emptied after a death, a rented property being handed back, or a garage and loft that have been quietly filling since the seventies. That job is fairly typical of what Farnham throws at us. Georgian frontages on narrow streets, a Victorian terrace behind them, then bungalows and post-war semis out towards Wrecclesham and Badshot Lea, and the odd big house up past the castle with an attic nobody has been into since the seventies. How a day actually goes
We arrive at the property for 9am and aim to have it emptied by the end of that day wherever the volume allows. Two things need saying about what we can't simply throw on. Soft furnishings first: sofas, armchairs, mattress toppers, bundles of duvets. And chemicals: part-used tins of gloss, calor bottles, drums of old fuel, asbestos sheeting off a garage roof. Those need arranging separately and can't travel in a mixed household load. Access, parking and the awkward ones
Not every clearance is a house with a drive. A good share of the older GU9 stock has no dropped kerb at all, so the van sits on the road and the crew walk everything out. Out in GU10, at Rowledge, Tilford, Frensham and the lanes towards Churt, the problem reverses: the drives are long and the gates are narrow, and a Luton that fits the road doesn't always fit the entrance. Photographs flatter a house. They always have. A room that looks half empty in a photo has a wardrobe behind the camera and a loft hatch above it, and every so often a job comes in at half again what the pictures suggested.
