Round here the three-beds are deceptive. Loft hatches with a proper ladder, a garage that has been a shed for thirty years, sometimes a lean-to on the back full of paint tins and garden chairs. Not every job runs to two days. That run of villages north-east of town — Bacton, Cotton, Mendlesham, Wetheringsett — is a regular one for us. So is the road the other way, through Creeting St Mary and Needham Market down towards Claydon, Barham and Bramford. Onehouse, Combs, the two Finboroughs and Buxhall sit near enough that we book them as Stowmarket. Stowupland, Old Newton with Dagworth, Haughley and Wetherden are the same. West towards Bury it is Elmswell, Woolpit, Norton, Tostock, Thurston and Drinkstone; east it is Debenham, Framsden, Helmingham and the Stonhams; north it runs up through Finningham and Walsham-le-Willows to Botesdale, Redgrave and Eye. Where it goes afterwards
Anything still usable is offered on before it goes near a skip lorry. Furniture in decent order, tools, unopened household bits — usually to a Suffolk charity shop or reuse project that will take a van delivery. What is genuinely finished goes to a permitted transfer site and is weighed and ticketed, so there is a paper trail for every load that leaves your drive. A short list of things simply cannot travel mixed in with household waste. Calor and other gas bottles, asbestos garage sheeting, old car batteries. Paint we will usually take where the count is sensible, and a garage in a Suffolk village will often hold more tins than the whole rest of the house put together. Sheeting and gas bottles need a specialist, and we would rather say that on the phone than find it out with the van already loaded.
