We have been clearing houses since 2007, and a steady share of that work lands in the Vale of White Horse. A house clearance in Wantage is usually one of two things. An older property in the town itself, with the parking that implies, or a house on one of the newer estates at Grove a mile up the road. Here is one of ours, in full.
The house in Grove was empty when we got there, and nobody came to let us in. A keysafe by the door, a four-digit code sent through by email, and that was the whole handover. December 2024. The instruction had come from a managing agent working out of an office in Cambridgeshire, well over a hundred miles away, who had never seen the place either. The request listed outbuildings, the loft, the integral garage, and the garden, with a standard one-off garden tidy while we were there. It said, in as many words, "The occupier has not requested to be present at the property". Grove sits a mile north of Wantage across the fields, still OX12. If you have ever tried to guess what is in a loft from a form on a screen you will know why we would rather look at a house clearance in Wantage on the day than argue about it afterwards.
It took two loads, both the same day. A fridge freezer out of the kitchen, a mattress, a television, and one upholstered item that had to travel on its own route — more on that below. A paint tin came out of the garage and went down as its own line on the paperwork, because paint does not travel with sofas and bagged household waste. The clean followed once the rooms were bare. And the last two entries on the file were postage: photographs posted to one address, the paperwork posted to another. That happens more than people expect on a Wantage clearance. Since 2023 that material must be kept separate and destroyed rather than tipped or recycled. That Is why the single upholstered item on the Grove job travelled on its own and was listed on its own. Then there is the chemical end of a house: paint, thinners, weedkiller, gas canisters, car batteries. Those need a hazardous route, so they are listed separately rather than swallowed into the load. Fridges and freezers go the same way, degassed properly, and mattresses too — nobody wants a mattress back out of a hedge with your address still on it.
Wantage, Grove and the villages round the Vale
We cover the whole of the Vale of White Horse from the same set of vans. Wantage and Grove in OX12, Abingdon and Drayton in OX14, the Hanneys just up the road in OX12, Faringdon and the villages around it in SN7, Shrivenham and Watchfield in SN6. Neighbouring towns have their own pages rather than being swallowed into this one. If the property you are ringing about is nearer the Thames than the Downs, you probably want house clearance in Abingdon. If it is in the city, house clearance in Oxford; and for the smaller market town over on the other side of the county, house clearance in Thame. Same team, same vans, same licence — it is only the drive that changes.
That last part matters for planning. Wantage lost its own station in 1964 and the branch tramway before that, so the nearest platform is Didcot Parkway, about ten miles east, and Swindon is the other option going west. Nobody arrives at a clearance by train, obviously, but it tells you the shape of the place. A market town of narrow older streets that fills up with cars because there is no other way in or out.
