The river splits it
North of the Mersey — Liverpool, Bootle, Crosby, Southport — is Victorian and Edwardian terrace in quantity, much of it converted, plus large houses in the suburbs that have been in the same hands for decades. Access is the terrace problem: entries, back lanes, and parking that is controlled near the centre.
South of the river is the Wirral, which behaves like a separate place and has its own page above these towns: Birkenhead, Wallasey, Prenton and Neston. People there say Wirral, not Merseyside, and they are right to.
St Helens and Newton-le-Willows on the eastern side are former industrial towns with terraced stock and easier access.
