Getting there, and where the vans can stand
Southport sits on the Sefton coast, the far northern end of Merseyside, with Lancashire beginning barely a field away at Banks. We come up the A565 through Formby and Ainsdale, or across from the Ormskirk direction. The town station is the terminus for two lines. Merseyrail runs down the coast through Hillside, Ainsdale, Freshfield and Formby, and the Wigan service inland — which matters if you are coming in to meet us and would rather not drive.
Parking is usually the easy part here, and that is not something we can say about most of the places we work. The Victorian and Edwardian streets between Lord Street and the seafront were laid out wide, with room for a Luton van outside the gate. The terraces further in often have a back entry, which is worth mentioning when you book: if there is rear access wide enough, big awkward items go out that way rather than being wrestled through a hall. Flats above the shops in the town centre are the opposite problem — narrow stairs, a shared door, and everything carried down by hand.
The seafront end can be windy enough to make loading slow. Not a complaint, just something we build into the day.

A good share of the Southport work is probate. Landlords and letting agents ring us for a different reason and usually in more of a hurry. An end of tenancy clearance is smaller than a full house — furniture left behind, a mattress, a fridge nobody wanted, a shed with half-used tins in it — and it is nearly always against a check-out date. We can work from keys collected from an agent with nobody present, and we can put the day in writing so the inventory clerk knows when the property will be clear.
Flat clearance in Southport
A flat clearance in PR8 or PR9 is its own animal. Above the shops in the middle of town you get a shared front door, a stair with a turn in it and no lift, and neighbours who did not ask for any of this. We carry down rather than drop anything out of a window, we sheet the common stair, and where we can we take the loading at the quieter end of the day. Very often a garage and loft clearance is the whole job, with the house itself already sorted by the family. Two things change the shape of that day and both are worth saying on the phone: whether the loft is boarded, and whether the garage can be opened from the outside. Single items and small loads we do as well — that side of it sits under house rubbish removal, and we also strip wallpaper, which surprises people until they have tried it themselves with a steamer and a Saturday.
What comes out, and where it ends up
Everything that leaves in the van is sorted, not tipped. Furniture, tools, bikes, crockery, garden gear — if it is sound and somebody would use it, we look for a reuse outlet or a charity shop that will take it rather than send it for disposal. What is left goes to a properly permitted site and comes off the van against a weighbridge ticket, so there is a record of every load. Ask for the waste transfer note and you get it; some solicitors want it on file and they are right to.
A few categories have their own route in law, and it is nothing to do with us being awkward. Fridges and freezers have to be degassed before anything else happens to them. Sofas, armchairs and padded seating are the other case. The treated foam inside them counts as a persistent organic pollutant, so it has to be kept apart from general waste and destroyed under its own controls, which is why we will ask on the phone how many soft seats there are. Mattresses and televisions are handled separately too, for their own reasons.
Then there are things we simply cannot put on a mixed load at all: tins of paint and thinners, garden chemicals, propane and butane cylinders, asbestos sheeting off an old garage roof. A council site will not take most of those from us either. If they are in the shed, tell us at the point of booking and we will arrange the right disposal or point you at Sefton's household waste centre. What we will not do is take them quietly and hope.
