The booking was for the 2nd and 3rd of February 2026. Two days, a three-bed house with the loft and the garage included, and a clean at the end. That was our last full house clearance in Whitchurch, up on one of the quieter closes in RG28. Two days is more than most three-beds ask for. This one earned it. The loft had been filled steadily for decades and never once emptied, the garage had stopped being a garage long before we got there. The property had to be left swept and wiped so it could be handed straight over.
A few things were staying, and they were listed for us before the day: all the white goods, plus a hall table with a lamp and a tangle of extension leads on it. Carpets stayed down. Curtains stayed up. That sounds like a small detail and it isn't. On a two-day job the team plans the loads around what's coming out, and knowing on the Friday that the cooker and the washing machine were not ours to shift changes how the first van gets packed.
The instruction came through a solicitor's office in Andover. The person arranging it lived over that way too rather than in the house. That is normal for this part of Hampshire. What came out, and where it went

The sort of paperwork that fills a room once you start pulling it out of drawers.

They don't take everything, and there's no point pretending otherwise, so we ring ahead rather than turning up hopefully. Clean clothing and books are the easy ones. Metal is sorted off the load and weighed in separately. Everything genuinely finished with is booked into a permitted transfer station, and the tickets are kept. Two categories have to travel apart from everything else, and that is the law rather than a preference of ours. Soft seating — sofas, armchairs, padded office chairs, some headboards — falls under the POP rules. It can't be mixed in with general bulky waste and has to go for controlled incineration on its own ticket. Fridges and freezers are the other one: the gas has to be drawn off under licence by a site set up for it. On another clearance of ours the entire contents of a house came out in a single load. Even so two mattresses and a fridge freezer had to be lifted back off it and sent their separate ways. It is worth knowing that before the day rather than watching it happen on the drive.
Some things we simply can't put in the back of a van with someone's furniture. Half-tins of gloss and thinners, camping gas cylinders, car batteries, oil drums, asbestos garage sheeting. If you spot any of it, say so early. For most of it we can arrange a separate collection, and for asbestos it needs a contractor trained for it, not us. On the February booking that question was answered flatly on the form — "THERE IS NO …… hazardous or verminous contents within the property" — and it is a useful thing to have in writing before a crew walks in.
