A recent Plymouth job out at St Budeaux, PL5, was a probate clearance arranged by a joint executor — and it ran the way we like these to. A large share of the PL-postcode work is probate, and often the person arranging it is an executor rather than a relative living in the house — sometimes a joint executor, sometimes a solicitor with the keys. That's routine for us, and we keep it simple. Nothing paid before we start, the estate invoiced, the solicitor copied in where it helps, and written confirmation the bill's settled sent over if that's wanted for the file.
On the St Budeaux job the executor came back partway through. The solicitors were dealing with probate of the will on the family's behalf, and asked that the invoice go straight to them with the firm's file reference on it. A larger probate house clearance in Plymouth, out at Elburton
The other Plymouth clearance worth setting out was a house in Elburton, PL9. It was run for an executor who did not live in Devon at all, a good few hours away and in no position to stand in the hall while it happened. That one wasn't a morning's work. A three-man team was on it across consecutive days. A load went out on the Monday, another on the Tuesday, a third on the Wednesday. An extra load went the same day, once it was plain the house held more than one run would shift.
Two pianos came out of it, which is more than we usually meet in one property. Pianos aren't a lift-and-go item: they're heavy, awkward on a doorway and they can't simply be tipped, so they go off for recycling as their own line of work. Three mattresses came out as well. Mattresses go through a regulated route rather than in with general waste, same as fridges and freezers, which are degassed by someone licensed to do it. None of that is a surprise on a full house; it just needs saying at the quote so the right van and the right time are set aside. At the end the executor confirmed in writing that they were satisfied with the work and authorised to say so, and settled by bank transfer the same day the invoice landed. That's a fairly typical shape for a distant executor: keys arranged locally, decisions by phone and email, and the paperwork tidy at the end.
An estimate on the day, if you'd rather
Not everyone wants to commit off a set of photos, and that's fine. As on the St Budeaux job, the team can walk round when they arrive and give you the figure then, before anything is loaded. That suits an estate job where an executor wants to see us before saying yes. The executor there put it plainly enough when they booked: "just to confirm as discuss that the team will do a quick walk around and give estimate on the day. Not expecting any issues, but I am joint executor so making sure all clear." That's exactly the right instinct, and it's why we put the arrangement in writing before the van sets off. Photos are quicker and usually get you a number sooner, but if you'd sooner decide on the morning with the team in front of you, just say so when you book and we'll arrange it that way. Either way, the price is agreed before we lift a thing.
A clean afterwards, where it's needed
A fair few Plymouth clearances finish with a clean rather than just an empty house — a place going to market, or a rented one handed back that has to be left spotless. We'll do the clearance and the clean together in one booking, though a full house with cleaning generally spreads into a second day rather than being squeezed into one.
