Whatever's still got use in it gets sorted before the tailgate goes up rather than after. Furniture that isn't broken, unopened bedding, tools, crockery, garden pots — Halton and Widnes have enough reuse shops and community projects between them that most of it finds a second house. Books and records we set aside separately; they move fast locally. The rest goes to a permitted transfer station where it's weighed in and paper-trailed, so if a solicitor or a beneficiary ever asks where the contents of the estate went, there's an actual document rather than a shrug. Sofas and armchairs are their own job now. The fire-retardant foam in upholstery is classed as a persistent organic pollutant, which means it can't be tipped or shredded with general bulky waste — it has to be kept apart and destroyed under permit. The two-day one
The other big one ran across two days. Owner living abroad, keys held this side, and a house that had been standing full for a long while. Two full days of a three-man team, five loads off the property in total, three mattresses out of the upstairs rooms.
Two days isn't unusual on a house that's been in one family since the estate was built. It's not the furniture that eats the hours — it's the small stuff. Drawers of it. Sheds with a floor you can't see. A garage where the up-and-over hasn't been lifted since about 2009 and the runners have rusted solid, so before anything comes out someone's lying on the gravel with a can of oil.
Getting a Luton van round Runcorn
Runcorn is two towns bolted together and they clear very differently.
The Old Town below the bridges is Victorian terraces and short streets with kerbs on both sides parked solid — Weston Point, Higher Runcorn, the roads behind the docks. There's no drive, and often no gap. Then there's the bridges. The Mersey Gateway is tolled, the Silver Jubilee is the old high-level route, and both of them can add half an hour if something's shut. We build that in rather than turn up late and blame the traffic.
Trains, if anyone's coming in for the day to meet us: Runcorn station is on the West Coast Main Line, twenty minutes or so from Liverpool Lime Street, and Runcorn East sits out on the Chester–Manchester line near Norton. Plenty of executors take the train up, hand over the key at nine, walk into town for a few hours and come back to an empty house.
