South Gloucestershire is the ring of towns and villages north and east of Bristol — Yate, Thornbury, Kingswood, Filton — and most people living there say Bristol, or say the name of their own town, rather than the county's.
Older residents say Avon, the county that covered Bristol and its surroundings from 1974 to 1996 and is still in daily use thirty years after it was abolished.
Suburb and village
Kingswood and the Bristol fringe are dense: Victorian and interwar terrace, on-street parking, and entries rather than drives.
Yate and Thornbury are postwar and modern estate housing with driveways and garages, easy to work in, and volume that sits in the garage and the loft.
The villages towards the Cotswold edge are older stone properties with outbuildings.
