Eight clearances have landed in Shropshire postcodes. The county is large, thinly populated and a long way from anywhere we usually start, so Shropshire work is planned as a trip with a date fixed in advance.

Older people here still say Salop, which was the county's official name until 1980 and has outlived it by decades.

Timber frame and hills

Shrewsbury and Ludlow are the interesting problem: medieval and Tudor stock inside a loop of the Severn, listed in quantity, with low doorways, staircases that turn twice and streets that were laid out for carts. What comes out of those houses comes out carefully or in pieces.

Oswestry, Whitchurch and the north are more ordinary market-town housing with somewhere to put a van. The hills south of Church Stretton are farms and cottages with barns, and those are day trips.
