Most of the house clearance work we do in Glasgow — Strathclyde to a generation that still says it — arrives the same way. A house lived in properly for forty-odd years, a family that moved away from the city long ago. A date by which the keys have to go back. We have been clearing properties since 2007, and in Glasgow we work right across the G postcodes, from the centre and the West End out to the East End, the south side and the towns ringing the city. Two of our own Glasgow jobs are set out below. They are about as unalike as two clearances get.
Kelvindale, G12: a house clearance in Glasgow run from four thousand miles away
The person instructing us on the Kelvindale job was living in Canada. They were not going to be in the country while the work was done. Happens often enough with an estate that we have a routine for it. Keys come from the estate agent, a neighbour, whoever is holding them locally. Nothing needs boxing or bagging up first — the team empties the cupboards, the wardrobes and the drawers themselves. Then, when the rooms are bare, we email photographs of them over. The person dealing with it can see the state of the place without getting on a plane. Anything that clearly matters — paperwork, photographs, a small thing of sentimental value — is set aside and posted on request rather than going out on the van.
Four mattresses came out of that house. Four. That is a house where the spare rooms were still made up from years back, and it is also four items that cannot just be tipped in with the general load. Mattresses have to go down their own route.
There was an upright fridge freezer as well. Fridges and freezers are classed as hazardous waste — the gas has to come out under licence, by someone permitted to do it. No transfer station will accept one loose off the back of a van.
One load did not empty the place. A second went the same day, and a further load followed after that, once the last of the house had been gone through properly. Nobody sensible looks at a house like that and promises a single trip.
Kelvindale itself sits between Maryhill and Anniesland, with its own station on the Anniesland line. The housing is mostly inter-war semis and terraces with narrow side paths. A Luton van cannot always get up to the door. Sometimes it is a carry of forty or fifty yards down a lane. That is much better known before the day than discovered on it.
Uddingston, G71: one load, one mattress
Not every house clearance in Glasgow is a three-load operation. In G71 we cleared a property for a customer who was dealing with a second house a short walk from their own front door. One van load, one mattress, done and away.
They wanted to settle it by card and asked us straight out: "Hi. How do I pay invoice will you phone and I pay by card." We rang, it was dealt with, and that was that. There is no upfront payment on any of our work: the invoice comes after the clearance, once you are happy with it. It can be settled by card, cheque or bank transfer.
Uddingston and Bothwell are handy for us. Ten minutes off the M74, a station on the main line into Glasgow Central. The sandstone semis round there tend to have back gates wide enough to get a barrow through. Tannochside is the same. Cambuslang and Blantyre over in G72 are much of a muchness with them.

Most weeks this is the bulk of it. Probate work has a rhythm of its own: the executor is often in another part of the country or another country entirely, the solicitor is waiting on confirmation. Flat clearance in the G postcodes
G1, G2, G3 and G4 in the centre, G11 in Partick and Broomhill, G12 in Hillhead, Hyndland and Kelvindale, G40 in Bridgeton and Calton, G41 and G42 through Pollokshields, Strathbungo and Govanhill. That is flats far more than houses, and flat clearance is a different animal from a semi with a driveway. Stairs, a shared close, neighbours who need to get past. A stair door that has to be kept shut against the weather.
Garage and loft clearance in Glasgow, and the shed with it
Half the volume in a family house is not in the rooms at all. Lofts eat hours; a garage in Cardonald or Mosspark that has not been opened since the car stopped fitting in it can hold more than the house above it. End of tenancy clearance in Glasgow
Landlords and letting agents ring us for end of tenancy clearance across G13, G14, G20, G31, G33 and G52, usually against a deadline: the tenant has gone, left a flat's worth of furniture. The next let starts on a fixed date. Carpets and underlay can be lifted and taken as part of the same visit. The property swept through, so the decorators are not working round a pile in the hall.

South of the Clyde we cover G41 to G46. Pollokshields, Shawlands, Govanhill, Mount Florida, Newlands, Pollokshaws, Cathcart, Croftfoot, Castlemilk, Thornliebank and Arden — plus G52 in Cardonald, Hillington and Mosspark, G53 in Pollok, Nitshill and Darnley, G73 in Rutherglen and Burnside, G76 around Clarkston, Busby and Eaglesham, and G78 in Barrhead and Neilston.
Then the ring of towns: G60 at Old Kilpatrick and Bowling, G61 in Bearsden, G62 in Milngavie, G63 out at Killearn, Drymen and Balfron, G64 in Bishopbriggs and Torrance, G65 in Kilsyth, G66 for Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Lennoxtown and Milton of Campsie, G67 and G68 in Cumbernauld, G71 for Uddingston, Bothwell and Tannochside, G72 for Cambuslang and Blantyre. G74 and G75 across East Kilbride. A few of the numbers are not places at all. G58, G70 and G90 are non-geographic codes rather than streets, so there is nothing there to empty.
Two of those neighbours have pages of their own: house clearance in Bearsden for G61, and house clearance in Bishopbriggs for the G64 end. Both are inside a normal working day of the city, and we run between them and Glasgow constantly.
That spread crosses several councils — Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire for Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch, South Lanarkshire for Uddingston, Cambuslang and East Kilbride, North Lanarkshire at Cumbernauld and East Renfrewshire round Clarkston and Barrhead. Tenement stairs, closes and the parking
Half the difficulty in this city is not the house, it is getting out of it. A top-floor tenement flat in the West End with a stone spiral close and no lift is a genuinely slow clearance: every wardrobe comes down on its side, every mattress goes down folded. The close has to stay passable for the neighbours the whole time. We would far rather know about it when you ring, so the right number of hands turns up.
Parking is the other one. Controlled zones through the centre and the West End mean a van cannot simply sit outside. If you can arrange a bay suspension or a permit through the council for the day, do. It saves a long carry and keeps the job moving. If you cannot, say so, and the team will work out the nearest legal spot beforehand instead of circling at half past nine.
How the day runs
We turn up at nine in the morning. A standard house clearance is a Luton furniture van and three of our staff. Most properties are done inside that day. If the place is cluttered, we carry on regardless and do extra loads; if it genuinely needs a second day, we say so on the day rather than at the end.
Nothing has to be sorted or packed for us. We clear inside cupboards, wardrobes and drawers, lift carpets and underlay where that is wanted, and sweep through at the end. What cannot go in a mixed load
Tins of paint, white spirit, thinners and camping gas cylinders do not travel with household waste. They need their own route and their own paperwork, so they are left unless they have been arranged for separately. Upholstered furniture is the other one: sofas, armchairs and padded dining chairs contain POPs, persistent organic pollutants, the flame retardants used in the foam. Since 2023 that upholstery has to be kept apart from general waste and destroyed through a controlled route rather than landfilled or recycled with everything else. Mattresses and fridges, as above, each have their own handling requirement.
Reuse, recycling and the licence
Furniture that is sound and still carries its fire label goes to a reuse outlet or a local charity wherever one will take it. Glasgow has a decent spread of those. Everything else goes to licensed recycling stations and transfer stations, and waste transfer notes are yours on request. Ask for them, and keep them. If a clearance leaves behind loose rubbish rather than furniture, that is our house rubbish removal side of things.
